Tonsil surgery tragedy, A rare tonsil surgery tragedy has struck a 13-year-old girl and it has left a terrible battle between her family and the hospital over her condition on life support. Yahoo News reports Dec. 20 that after a routine tonsillectomy, things went horribly wrong for Jahi McMath.
A Superior Court judge in Calif. has ordered Children's Hospital Oakland to keep Jahi on life support until a second medical opinion is made. A hearing is scheduled to find a doctor for the teen's exam on Monday. As was stated in several reports, hospitals are not obligated to keep patients on life support if they determine they are brain dead.
On Dec. 9 the tonsil surgery tragedy transpired after Jahi underwent a tonsillectomy to help her sleep apnea. After she was moved to the recovery room, her mother -- Naila Winkfield -- noticed that she was wearing a bloody hospital gown and holding a pink cup full of blood. She continued to bleed over the next few hours then went into cardiac arrest. On Dec. 12 doctors declared Jahi brain dead.
The hospital is not allowed to disclose any information on the tonsil surgery tragedy due to privacy laws. The family has talked to the press about the awful experience and is ready to spend time with Jahi for Christmas. They believe she needs more time to heal if she is going to wake up.
