Ded moroz and new year parties, TV shows in Tajikistan will not feature Ded Moroz, Snegurochka, or decorated fir-trees this holiday season, the TajikTA agency reports.
According to the TV and Radio Broadcasting Committee’s deputy director, Dilafruz Amirkulova, the Tajik TV stations did not emphasize the figures of Ded Moroz and Snegurochka over the last 2-3 years in Tajikistan. Ms. Amirkulova says such “pompous celebrations” are saved for the celebrations of Navruz in March.
Saidali Siddikov, the first deputy of the committee chair, confirmed that the two holiday figures would no longer be featured on state TV stations, RIA Novosti reports. Instead, the holiday shows will feature winter, snow, New Year celebrations, music, songs, dances, celebratory wishes, and tables free of alcohol, Ded Moroz and his entourage, Mr. Siddikov is cited as saying. He underlined that the TV and Radio Committee issued no decree to that effect; the TV channels administrations adopted such a decision themselves.
Background: For the fourth time, the issue of decorating fir-trees and celebrating the New Year is arising in December in Tajikistan. Several respected Muslim clerics and Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan spoke against celebrating the holiday as a Christian event three years ago.
On 30 Dec 2011, head of the Council of Clerics of Tajikistan, Saidmukarram Abduqodirzoda, told journalists that decorating the fir-tree, and dances and games around it are alien traditions for Tajiks and contradict Islamic laws. On the eve of the year 2013, a young man wearing a Ded Moroz costume was killed in Dushanbe. According to the murdered person’s relatives, when he approached his house, about 30 young men attacked him, shouting out “You are an infidel.”
The New Year’s Day is an official holiday in Tajikistan. The RIA Novosti agency reports that the Dushanbe city hall will erect a 22-meter fir-tree on the main square.
