Paul rudd ant man

Paul rudd ant man, The official confirmation that Paul Rudd will portray the title role in the upcoming movie of the same name has created some controversy.  The casting of Rudd has some critics and comic book fans concerned about the fate of the Edgar Wright-directed film.  Online columnist Mike Fleming Jr. of Deadline.com said: “(While) Rudd has proven himself adept at light drama and he is exceptionally good at comedy . . . I never really thought of him as superhero material.”

Marvel had originally wanted Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the Edgar Wright-directed film.  Gordon-Levitt however opted to sign on for Warner Brothers’ Sandman film.  In fact, he hopes to direct it as well.  The script, written by Wright and Joe Cornish, concerns Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym, a scientist who can shrink himself to the size of an ant.

Rudd will be under the microscope as the majority of Marvel’s other superhero movies have been successes.   Ant-Man, however, will not be an ensemble cast but rest solidly on the shoulders of one actor—Rudd.  The Ant-Man character is significant in the history of the Avengers, but he might not be interesting enough for the general movie-going populace.  Again, Rudd is not necessarily an action star either.

Casting comedians as super-heroes has always had mixed results.  The casting of Michael Keaton as Batman in the 1989 motion picture of the same name comes to mind.  While the film was a blockbuster, originally Keaton was considered to be too much of a funny man and too short to believably portray the masked manhunter.

Ryan Reynolds, who was cast as Wade Wilson in the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie and as DC Comic’s emerald gladiator Green Lantern the 2011 film of the same name both met with mixed results.  On the other hand, Robert Downey Jr was initially a questionable choice and yet he ha worked out well in the role of Iron Man.  Will Rudd work as well?

Perhaps the final word for now should go to an online commenter by the name of “Hank Pym” who said: “I was an original member of the Avengers.  I served in the Avengers more consistently than Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America.  Paul Rudd would be alright to represent me. Though, I would prefer that Simon Pegg fellow.”
