Nigeria seizes more than 6 tons of illegal drugs in Borno in 2013

Nigeria seizes more than 6 tons of illegal drugs in Borno in 2013, Nigerian authorities said they are attempting to crack down on drug trafficking and have seized more than six tons of illegal drugs in Borno state this year.

Authorities have also arrested 61 people for trafficking the drugs, including marijuana and cocaine, Voice of America reported.

Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan, Borno state's attorney general and commissioner for justice, said he and other officials are concerned about the trafficking and the rise in drug use.

"The illegal routes are not even known to the authorities themselves," Lawan said. "We have plan A when the barons have plans A, B, C. They always think ahead of the authorities."

Checkpoints and raids in the state's capital of Maiduguri have been instrumental, Lawan said.

Authorities are also working on setting up an informant network.

Earlier this week, the United Nations Security Council called for cooperation against traffickers and said that more than $1.2 billion worth of cocaine passes through the region each year.
