Man throws son, 3, off NYC high-rise, then jumps; both killed, New York City police said a Brooklyn man threw his son, 3, off the roof of a 52-story Manhattan building, fatally injuring the child, then jumped to his death.
The man, 35-year-old Dmitriy Kanarikov, died immediately and his son, Kirill, died at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, the New York Times reported.
Police didn't elaborate on what caused the man to want to kill himself and his son.
Dmitriy Kanarikov had met his wife, Svetlana Kanarikov, to pick up Kirill at 10 a.m. Sunday at the 17th Precinct station house, a neutral location the couple chose, said John J. McCarthy, the police department's chief spokesman.
They were supposed to exchange custody of Kirill again at 1 p.m., but Dmitriy Kanarikov didn't show up.
Police said it's not clear why he chose the Manhattan high-rise to jump from, though investigators believe he had a friend who might have lived there.
The Kanarikovs, who spoke mostly Russian, purchased a two-story home in Mill Basin, Brooklyn, during the summer and were spending time renovating, neighbors said. They said they stopped seeing Svetlana Kanarikov at the apartment about a month ago.
