Henry Melton arrested

Henry Melton arrested, Chicago Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton was arrested for assault and public intoxication in Grapevine, Texas, on Saturday, and he was released on bond the next morning, Dec. 22.

Michael C. Wright of ESPN.com reported the news but added that outsiders should not rush to judge Melton in the immediate aftermath of this run-in with the law.

Melton was part of the myriad of injuries to strike the Bears' defensive line during the 2013 NFL season, as he saw his campaign end in the fourth quarter of Week 3's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 27-year-old suffered a torn ACL, per Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune, which has been part of the reason why Chicago ranks last in the NFL against the run, yielding 152.4 yards per game.

Another unique element the 6'3", 295-pounder brings to the table is his knack for collapsing the pocket from the inside. Melton registered 13 sacks in 29 games between 2011 and 2012.

After being selected to the Pro Bowl last year, Melton was designated with the franchise tag, but now he's due to be an unrestricted free agent, per Spotrac.com.

The devastating knee injury was a formidable setback in and of itself, and now this off-field mishap hurts his chances of remaining in the Windy City even more. Depending on how well Melton rehabilitates from his injury, the Bears may not be able to afford losing him.

This incident could actually give the front office leverage in negotiating more of a short-term deal, but Melton is a considerable gamble no matter which way general manager Phil Emery approaches talks.

It will be interesting to see whether this legal mishap hurts Melton's value on the open market from prospective suitors.

Chances are, if Melton exhibits remorse over what happened and can reconcile with the Bears' regime, the team that took a flier on him in the first place with a fourth-round pick in the 2009 draft will retain him for next season.
